چکیده

We construct a Hamiltonian formulation of quasi-local general relativity using an extended phase space that includes boundary coordinates as configuration variables. This allows us to use Hamiltonian methods to derive an expression for the energy of a non-isolated region of space-time that interacts with its neighbourhood. This expression is found to be very similar to the Brown-York quasi-local energy that was originally derived by HamiltonJacobi methods. We examine the connection between the two formalisms and find that when the boundary conditions for the two are harmonized, the resulting quasi-local energies are identical. Gauge group and reality conditions in Ashtekar’s complex formulation of canonical gravity

We discuss reality conditions and the relation between spacetime diffeomorphisms and gauge transformations in Ashtekar’s complex formulation of general relativity. We produce a general theoretical framework for the stabilization algorithm for the reality conditions, which is different from Dirac’s method of stabilization of constraints. We solve the problem of the projectability of the diffeomo...

Parametrized field theories, which are generally covariant versions of ordinary field theories, are studied from the point of view of the covariant phase space: the space of solutions of the field equations equipped with a canonical (pre)symplectic structure. Motivated by issues arising in general relativity, we focus on: phase space representations of the spacetime diffeomorphism group, constr...

A Phase Space Path Integral for (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity

I investigate the relationship between the phase space path integral in (2+1)-dimensional gravity and the canonical quantization of the corresponding reduced phase space in the York time slicing. I demonstrate the equivalence of these two approaches, and discuss some subtleties in the definition of the path integral necessary to prove this equivalence. email: [email protected] Over the p...

About Time

The concept of time is discussed in the context of the canonical formulation of the gravitational field. Using a hypersurface orthogonal foliation, the arbitrariness of the lapse function is eliminated and the shift vector vanishes, allowing a consistent definition of time. I. ON LAPSES AND SHIFTS As it well know, the space-time of Newtonian mechanics is foliated by globally defined 3-dimension...

New Tetrads for General Relativity

We find a one parameter family of Lagrangians, describing Einstein's general relativ-ity in terms of tetrads which are not c-numbers but obey exotic commutation relations. The noncommutativity completely drops out at the level of the metric theory, where the Christoffel symbols and the components of the Riemann tensor are ordinary numbers and have the usual form in terms of the space–time metri...
